Award winning horror screenplay needs actors to read it in front of an audience

10 Actors for horror screenplay reading - Wellington

Casting complete. Applications are now closed.

This reading will place on the evening of Monday the 20th of August at Toi Whakaari Drama School in Newtown.

The reading is being done in association with Bluecat, an organization that's focused on developing screenwriters. Gordy Hoffman, the head of Bluecat will be in New Zealand in August and suggested Bluecat promote a reading of one of my screenplays that won the award for best international entry in Bluecat's most recent contest. Gordy hasn't got much of a budget for the reading, meaning that we're hoping some actors will be willing to donate some of their time. As an aspiring artist myself, I'm not entirely comfortable asking people to do this. However, I do think it's worth mentioning that Gordy will be using Bluecat's influence to try to get local production companies along to the reading. There will almost certainly be several Wellington based screenwriters attending the event as well others with ties to the film industry. Gordy has credits as a writer, producer and director in Hollywood and will certainly be in attendance. I do believe this reading has the potential to benefit actors involved with regard to networking and exposure within the film industry.

I'd really love to have some actors on board who can breathe some life into the characters and can be relied on to turn up!

The screenplay itself is a horror/thriller titled "Random Acts Of Violence." It's not a particularly warm fuzzy story but I think it'll be fun to perform! It's about a group of people who are quarantined in a research facility after being exposed to a virus that makes them alternate between a rabid psychotic state and a normal lucid one. There's a few twists and turns along the way and some tricky ethical choices for the characters. I've been able to get some feedback on the script from a few industry professionals and established writers and it's been amazingly positive. The script is a quick read and an unpredictable ride.

We have several fantastic actors on board already and some more who I am hoping to confirm in the next few days but... we need a few more, especially for the male roles.

Mae-Ling

A back packer and X box junkie. She spends more time in a state of raving psychosis than any other character.
As this is a reading rather than a filming we would consider a person of any ethnicity for the role but it would be great to get someone with Asian ethnic heritage.

Females, aged 18 to 35 from Wellington, New Zealand

  • Minimum Acting experience: No previous acting experience

Silvarn

A affable Swedish backpacker. He's trying to earn money to fund his travels.
It would be great to get someone that can do a Swedish accent. However, as this is a reading rather than a traditional performance, it is not essential.

Dr. Steinberg

A calculating scientists with uncompromising focus.

Soldier

There are three characters that feature at the very end of the story and deliver only a few lines each. They are all soldiers and could be played by either gender. While it would be possible to have these played by actors whose characters die off earlier, they present an opportunity for any actor wanting to "dip their toe in" and try a few lines.
You can also gain good karma if you're willing to help out with putting out chairs for the performance!

Males, aged 18 to 99 from Wellington, New Zealand

  • Minimum Acting experience: No previous acting experience
