A short film about the sexual awakening of a young black male facing cultural rejection & fear
Sexual awakening and self discovery, ‘Man dem’ is a short drama about a young black man called Winston who is just discovering he is gay and is trying to keep it a secret due to the fear of being rejected from both his family and friends.
He is from a close nit Jamaican family who are very proud of their heritage. They are from a strong Pentecostal church background and hold strong beliefs against homosexuality, and the meaning of Jamaican pride.
Everyday is a psychological and emotional struggle for Winston because he has so much to deal with and no one to talk to about it, so he battles with it in his head racking his mind working out if he exposes his secret, would it be too much a risk and shame to the ones he loves and cares about, will he hurt himself by denying his heart’s new quest.Though some main characters are humorous, Winston serious out look on his situation over powers the comedic aspect.
Theme: Man dem’ is about acceptance: the courage to take hard journeys and self discovery. The theme is about being considerate to others, treating people as they would want to be treated despite there differences.

Chantelle
Females, aged 17 to 22 from the United Kingdom
A sweet hopeful young lady. Chantelle is a sweet caring girl, she is a mature young lady and highly favoured in the miller family. One year into her relationship with Winston and she is deeply in love. Her sexual desires are slowly creeping up and she feels she is ready to take the relationship to the next level. Chantelle was brought up in the same church as the Miller family but only attends church weekly to keep up appearances as a good girl to the Miller family.

Hayley Miller
Females, aged 17 to 23 from the United Kingdom
A loving loud strong-minded sister. Winston’s older feisty twin sister. Hayley loves worshiping God through songs of praise, she loves singing in her church choir, she loves to sing full stop. She is an aspiring song writer and is always the first choice to sing lead by choir master. She is bold and considerate, loves to talk but doesn’t like to be proven wrong so she studies extra time so no one can question her.

Cassandra
Females, aged 30 to 42 from the United Kingdom
An emotional mother. She loves God and her family dearly and is lenient about things but when it comes to God, she is passionate in her Pentecostal beliefs. She is quiet spoken and will allow others to influence her decisions. She named Winston after her father as was a daddy’s girl before he passed away. She is well spoken but can go into a Jamaican accent when angry.

Cordelia Miller
Females, aged 45 to 70 from the United Kingdom
A proud honest woman. Cordelia is a prominent figure, opinionated 68 year old grand mother who can never be told she is wrong. She is a fierce, forceful Jamaican presence in the Miller household. She holds strong Pentecostal church values since her childhood and loves her God, and sets the standards for the bases of the Miller’s family tradition which is rooted on her strict up-bringing in Jamaica. She also has a medium Jamaican accent.

Winston Miller
Males, aged 18 to 23 from the United Kingdom
Winston is a young black boy from a close Jamaican family with strong Pentecostal beliefs. In looking at him, Winston is a typical rude boy with strong features and into trendy clothes. He looks after himself, he goes to the gym regularly, on a basket ball team, he says what he feels, but has become shy due to feeling uncontrollable gay urges. Winston is prone to run away from his problems, or get some one else to sort them out for him.

Dominick
Males, aged 18 to 23 from the United Kingdom
A good friend with a cheeky mouth. He is an 18 year lad. He is charming and street savvy, has many muscles and is very attractive. Dominick is as straight as can be, puts his friends in high regard and treats the women in his family with great respect but has little respect for most girls and sees them as nothing more than sexual conquests. He is very popular and his views on life are not challenged by anyone.

Daniel
Males, aged 18 to 27 from the United Kingdom
(White Male) A free spirited young man, body and soul. He is a confident bi-sexual and a rather eccentric character, happy the way he is and encourages Winston to explore his sexuality. Daniel has a been there done that attitude and is proud of his decisions.

Uncle Lenny
Males, aged 30 to 55 from the United Kingdom
A solemn drunk. Lenny is so intoxicated all the time with drink he is in his own world, he likes to keep everything short and simple. He is as opinionated as his mother and expects people to understand him straight away; he sees everything as black and white. He just knows he deserves a good meal inside him every day and doesn’t feel he should have to cook it for him. Due to Lenny spending a decent amount of time in Jamaica he has a strong Jamaican accent now that he is 45.
