'Like Father' is a short film set in 1960s Wales, and centres around one family embroiled in the changing social attitudes of the time. Phil Davies, like his father before him, works in the Ebbw Vale steelworks. At the time, the steelworks was one of the largest in Europe, and was the centre of a large working-class community. If you didn't work in the steelworks, you were associated with it in some way. Phil's passion, like many of his friends, is amateur horse breeding. This passion provides a welcome reprieve from the industrial nature of his work. His son, Stefan, is approaching the school leaving age. Phil fully expects Stefan to follow him into a steady job in the steel industry, but Stefan and Phil's more progressive wife Winna have other ideas. Stefan has the potential for a continued career in education, but at what cost? Phil is faced with a choice. Will he be able to shelve his community pride and make a great personal sacrifice to offer his son a shot at a better life?

'Like Father' is a graduation film being produced by students from Newport Film School, as well as various industry professionals. We have a large, enthusiastic and experienced crew, and have provisional shoot dates set for mid-February. The production is based out of South Wales (Cardiff and Newport mainly), so if you're local, that's great, but if not, you will be put up and fed. The film is also set in Wales, and examines Welsh cultural heritage. As a result, believable Welsh accent is necessary for all roles. Horses are also integral to the story, so it would be beneficial if you're comfortable working around animals.

This is an ambitious film being made with a small budget, so unfortunately the roles are unpaid. However, we think we have an interesting and unique story which has already persuaded the crew to give up their time for free. On completion of the project, all materials would be provided for showreel/portfolios. Auditions will be held sometime in January dependent on availability. We'll contact you by email or phone with a date and location (likely Cardiff or Newport). When applying, please include a full resume along with links to any showreels/previous work.

Phil Davies

Welsh (valleys) accent necessary.

Phil Davies is a kind, passionate, but traditional man. He is very much a part of the insular working class community surrounding the steelworks, and inherently nostalgic. He is struggling to accept the more progressive ideas that came around during the 1960s, which brings him into conflict with his wife and son. He is immensely passionate about his horse, Leon, but is occasionally short tempered.

Males, aged 35 to 50 from Newport, United Kingdom

Minimum Acting experience: No previous acting experience
Languages spoken: English
Accents spoken: UK Welsh

Winna Davies

Welsh (valleys) accent necessary.

Winna Davies is Phil's wife and the mother of his child. She is a strong, resilient woman, and values her family above all. Like Phil, she is extremely passionate, but unlike him, she holds more progressive social views. Like any mother, she wants the best for her son, but understands that this may mean a break in tradition.

Females, aged 30 to 45 from Newport, United Kingdom

Minimum Acting experience: No previous acting experience
Accents spoken: UK Welsh

Steffan Davies

Welsh accent necessary.

Steffan Davies is Phil and Winna's son, and an only child. At 15/16, he is approaching the school leaving age. He is developing into a strong, independent young man, and his clear intelligence has given him prospects to continue his education. This is something he is keen to do, but understands that this may cause conflict with his father's aspirations for him.

Males, aged 15 to 17 from Newport, United Kingdom

Minimum Acting experience: No previous acting experience
Accents spoken: UK Welsh
