2008-2009 season includes:
---------------------------
- Lydia. By Octavio Solis. Director: Juliette Carillo
1st rehearsal: January 5, 2009. Runs: February 6 – 28.

Set in the 1970s on the Texas border separating the United States and Mexico, Lydia is an intense, lyrical, and magical new play that marks the Yale Rep debut of award-winning playwright Octavio Solis. The Flores family welcomes Lydia, an undocumented maid, into their El Paso home to care for their daughter Cecí, who was tragically disabled in a car accident on the eve of her quinceañera, her fifteenth birthday. Lydia's immediate and seemingly miraculous bond with the girl sets the entire family on a mysterious and shocking journey of discovery. Lydia is an unflinching and deeply emotional portrait of a Mexican immigrant family caught in a web of dark secrets.

- Death of a Salesman. By Arthur Miller. Director: James Bundy
Featuring Charles S. Dutton as Willy Loman.
1st rehearsal: March 16, 2009. Runs: April 24 — May 23.

An air of the dream clings to the place, Miller wrote describing the Loman family house—a house one mortgage payment away from finally being paid off. For Willy Loman, there is only one dream: the American Dream. After 36 years on the road in its pursuit, the traveling salesman, haunted by missed opportunities and an uncertain future, must come to terms with a lifetime of self-deception that has distorted his dream into an American tragedy.

Please apply now for auditions or more information.

Location: New York, United States

Rene (Lydia)

Males, aged 16 to 30 from the United States

Male, late teens/20s. Mexican-American from Texas (ideally the actor can capture the vocal cadences of the culture). Very closeted macho gay man. Edgy and angry--uses violence to cover his feelings. But deep down, sensitive and loving. The play is set in the 1970’s.

Biff Loman (Death of a Salesman)

Males, aged 18 to 35 from the United States

African-American male. 34, but also plays 18, so a man who can convey a sense of youth is wanted. Attractive with a worn air, a great smile and an undercurrent of moodiness, Biff has dreams, like his father, but he has faced defeat earlier and more often, and wrestles more directly with truth, while still being attached to the convenience of lies.

Happy Loman (Death of a Salesman)

Males, aged 18 to 35 from the United States

African-American male. 32, but also plays 16, powerfully made, with sexuality a visible color on him. More confused and hard-skinned than Biff, he doesn’t face defeat, choosing instead to wrap himself in comforting fictions of consumerism and sex.

Bernard (Death of a Salesman)

Males, aged 18 to 34 from the United States

African-American male. 34, but also plays 18, Biff and Happy’s childhood friend, grown into a lawyer arguing before the Supreme Court. A second banana, loyal and worried as a teenager, Bernard is one of those men whose great gift of earnestness allows him to mature into the kind of man everyone respects. A truth teller, and a generous soul, but nobody’s push over.

Ben (Death of a Salesman)

Males, aged 55 to 65 from the United States

African-American male, 60s. Has the quality of genius, of success incarnate; smooth, elegant, authoritative, stolid, certain, with the element of faraway places. Charismatic.

Howard Wagner (Death of a Salesman)

Males, aged 28 to 40 from the United States

African-American male, 30s. Inherited the sales business from his father. Married with two children, Howard is a plainspoken businessman with an enthusiastic devotion to gadgetry, whose management style dates from a time before “active listening” and “mirroring”.

Jenny (Death of a Salesman)

Females, aged 35 to 60 from the United States

African-American female, 40s-50s. Charley’s secretary. Organized, not especially empathetic. Also understudies Linda Loman.

Stanley (Death of a Salesman)

Males, aged 25 to 30 from the United States

African-American male, late 20s. A waiter, he is street savvy and slick, priding himself on his ability to charm his customers into the extra 10% on the tip.

Miss Forsythe

Females, aged 25 to 35 from the United States

African-American female, late 20s, attractive, stylish, dressed in fur, has some secrets that she barely admits to herself, which makes her just a little bit more gullible to others.

Letta

Females, aged 25 to 35 from the United States

African-American female, late 20s. Miss Forsythe’s friend, attractive, energetic, not sophisticated.

Woman

Females, aged 35 to 45 from the United States

African-American female, early 40s. Has affair with Willy. Knows how to work a situation and get what she wants.
