A youth event featuring original performances from 15 – 18yr olds.
Word Up! is a free participation youth event, held every year in association with the Going West Books and Writers Festival and the Corban Estate Arts Centre. The event is arranged to support emerging writing talent, focusing on poetry, hip-hop rap and song writing. The goal is to encourage performers of original word based material aged 15 – 18 to perform in front of a live audience.
If students don’t feel comfortable in participating as part of the act, they can sit in as live audience, and show their support for friends and family, for just a gold coin donation at the door. In previous years Word Up! has featured diverse acts ranging from original hip-hop rap to first time comedians, songs sung to acoustic guitar, raw emotional poetry; and talented bands performing catchy, clever and fresh pacific sounds.
The event is always an inspiring evening which showcases the culture, heart, passion, ambition and talent in young people that is often not celebrated enough. Each year there is a resounding agreement that Word Up! should happen on a monthly or even weekly occurrence. This is testament to how well Word Up! is received, not just by students and youth, but also by teachers, parents and the community.
A fun and fast paced night held in Henderson. The local venue will be kitted out with professional stage lighting, sound crew and MC. Talent scouts will be invited to attend; there will be giveaways, refreshments, a DJ throughout the night and special performance by an up and coming band. Word Up! Youth performances + Band + DJ + MC Taaz - Friday 5th September 7pm - 10pm. Cost: Free for participants, audience: Gold coin entry – all ages.
