I play a 5 piece Custom Ludwig drum kit in 7 ply birch with natural birch wood finish along with Pacific/DW 10 ply maple snare and wood rims complete with all Zildian K Custom Hybrid cymbals.
I also have a 1950 vintage Leedy and Ludwig Classic kit in white marine pearl finish on 3 ply maple shells complete with vintage Aquarian heads. Included is a Leedy and Ludwig 14 x 6.5 'Broadway' Snare Drum in White Marine Pearl complete with 16 streamlined Beaver Tail tension casings, double flanged counter hoops, one-piece extension strainer. Similar drums to this were used and endorsed by many famous drummers of the day including Jack Sperling with Tex Beneke Orch, Irv Kluger with Artie Shaw Band and Sonny Greer with Duke Ellington Orchestra.
I also play a 1959 Transition Badge Ludwig Pioneer Snare (Mahogany/Poplar/Mahogany shell) in WMP finish. The sound is classic warm and woody vintage.
In addition I play assorted percussion including a birch wood De Gregorio cajon etc.
My playing experience goes back many years as I started playing (or hitting) drums and things from the age of about 5 years. At school I joined a rock band as well as a pipe band where I eventually became leading stroke side drummer. From here I gravitated towards playing in a variety of bands playing different genres including covers, prog rock, blues/delta/rock, soul, motown, r&b, jazz standards/ jazz - rock/funk, folk and skiffle. My experience also includes periods spent as a depping drummer mainly in a variety of dance bands.
Apart from lessons taken in side drum notation and rudiments whilst at school, I also studied with the London based jazz drummer Lloyd Ryan, who at the time had Phil Collins as a pupil. In addition, I took lessons in tuned percussion (mainly tympani) at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, under the tutorlage of the principal percussionist for the BBC Symphony Orchestra who at the time also had Carl Palmer of ELP as a pupil.
I have attended numerous drum and percussion master-classes given by world class drummers eg. Louis Bellson, Jack de Jonnette, Billy Cobham, Peter Erskine, Danny Gottlieb, Dave Weckle, Alphonse Mouzon, Steve Gadd, Carl Palmer, Bill Bruford, Jon Hiseman, Stewart Copeland, Pete Lockett etc.
I've always played at an amateur or semi-pro level but have in the past had a few offers to go pro including one from Philip Goodhand-Tait to support Lou Reed on a UK Tour back in 1973. P.G-T later toured the US as support band with Elton John and later with Bob Marley. He is also a prolific songwriter and has written songs for Roger Daltrey amongst others.
My preferred genres these days are different shades of jazz 'n blues but I'm happy playing virtually anything.
