Virgin Media Shorts is officially back for its fifth year, and it’s bigger and better than ever before. Now with an extra 13th spot on the shortlist, we’re ready to uncover the best film making talent Britain has to offer.
This year’s competition is open for entries until 12th July, after which 13 shortlisted entries will be screened in over 200 UK cinemas for a year. Next, a Grand Prize winner is chosen by our panel and movie lovers everywhere can vote online for their favourite to win the People’s Choice Award. Film fans can vote with their remotes this year too, by picking their favourite film through their Virgin Media TiVo® boxes.
Entering the competition couldn’t be easier; simply upload your film (no longer than 2 minutes 20 seconds) to www.virginmediashorts.co.uk before 12pm on 12th July 2012.
What’s up for grabs this year?
• 13 shortlisted films will be screened in over 200 cinemas nationwide for a whole year
• One Grand Prize winner lands £30,000 funding to make their next film with priceless mentoring from the BFI
• The People's Choice winner bags £5,000 funding and BFI mentoring
Plus every entry will be showcased to thousands on our website, and through our iPad, iPhone and TiVo® apps, so even films that don’t make it to the final will get heaps of exposure.
For those who prefer watching films to making them, there are plenty of ways to get stuck in this year. You can vote for your favourite short, join the debate online, win prizes and come along to our swanky screening events. Plus for the first time ever, you can help nudge your favourite film into the spotlight with the ‘Lucky 13th’ place on the shortlist.
While our team of curators select 12 final films, Shorts fans will have a week to shout about their favourite entries and get one extra film onto the shortlist. When the competition closes, you’ll have a week to share your favourite film on the website, via Twitter, Facebook and email, and the short with the most online buzz will hit cinemas for a year. An extra chance to win for one lucky film maker, an extra way to get involved for film lovers everywhere.
Virgin Media Shorts shines a light on the best up-and-coming British film talent with help from a prestigious industry judging panel. Previous judges include actor John Hurt (1984, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy), director Paul Greengrass (Bourne Ultimatum), director Mat Whitecross (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll), actor Kevin Spacey (American Beauty, The Usual Suspects) and director Duncan Jones (Moon).
Our winners don't just get their work seen by millions in cinemas; they turn industry heads, too.
2009 winner Luke Snellin clinched a BAFTA nomination for his winning Virgin Media Shorts film 'Mixtape', and is now working on his first feature. Oscar Sharp, 2010 winner, was nominated for a BIFA for 'Sign Language’ and his latest short, starring Olivia Colman, will be unveiled shortly!
