His playing is subtle but assertive, simple and yet peppered with juicy bits of South American rhythm – giving just the right nuance to whatever he turns his hand to. Hailing from is native Brazil, Uira Nogueira has been active on the London music scene for several years. Dividing his time between playing pop, rock and traditional Brazilian music, his drumming style draws on a multitude of influences including pop, jazz, classical, Latin music and samba. He plays not only traditional kit, but also cajone, electronic kit and percussion. Uira grew up in a very musical family and was only 9 years old when he started to play the drums. His mother sang and his father played guitar. ‘Music was a major part of family life’ says Uira. By the time he was 16 he was playing drums and percussion professionally. After playing with bands for 8 years in restaurants, clubs, festivals and at Carnival in Bahia, he went to university in Salvador where he studied music education. During this period he played with such greats as Carlinhos Brown, Armandinho, Geronimo and Timbalada. While living in London he has devoted some time to study, completing a diploma at the Drumtech School in London‘an amazing experience’. But his passion is for playing live and currently he is involved in 9 different projects, from singer/songwriters to traditional Brazilian groups, to educational work. The groups he is involved with include: Kaw Regis, Jen Charlton, Setino Legado, ‘Angelita’, Rebecca Vallim and Manus Manus Band; and he has graced the stages of venues such as Charlie Wrights, the Jazz Café and Ronnie Scott’s. www.myspace.com/uiracairo
