Influences: Amy Winehouse, Ella Fitzgerald, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Erykah Badu, Kt Tunstall, Pink, Paloma Faith
I returned In January 2012 from nearly 4 years of playing 2nd trumpet on board many Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships. We played all different styles of music nightly. Productions, guest entertainers, big band, jazz band etc. For each show we had very little rehearsal time and had to perform the shows on the same night of seeing the music for the first time. Therefore, sight reading was a must!
Since being back in the UK I am a member of 2 different covers bands. One is a more dedicated to soul whereas the other is slightly more jazz, blues orientated.
I have been playing the trumpet since the age of 6 and am currently at an above grade 8 standard.
I enjoy playing a wide variety of musical styles. Before working on ships, I was a member of 2 big bands where I played either lead or 2nd trumpet. One had a male and female vocalist for the 'easy listening' swing tunes such as those sung by Frank Sinatra and the other performed original compositions composed by the band leader. I also played in a wind band and brass quintet. We rehearsed weekly and performed regular concerts for all types of audiences and occasions.
Music is a very important part of my life and has always and will be.
I have studied music at both GCSE level and A-level. During my educational years I received many opportunities to perform and listen to different bands. These included a jazz band, wind band, soul band, small jazz ensemble and an orchestra. I have a keen interest in jazz improvisation so using private tuition I started learning techniques which I have been able to apply when playing in live performances. I benefit from listening to recordings and watching live artists of different influential musical genres. Freddie Hubbard, Kenny Wheeler, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Gordan Goodwins Big Phat Band, Arturo Sandoval and Maynard Ferguson and many more musicians have had a large influence on my musical taste and performance skills.
During college myself and a few other students formed a small 6-8 piece jazz ensemble. We performed regular gigs for many different paid and unpaid events. We also went on tour in France along with our college jazz band. I was invited back two years later after leaving college to attend as staff and help out with the trumpet section.
I also have experience with playing in showbands when Petersfield Youth Theatre put on Guys and Dolls and Charles Dickins' Smike. I found this to be very fulfilling and got a kick out of performing for these.
