I've been teaching dance for more than 40 years. During that time I've been engaged in choreography, syllabus design, teacher training and lecturing at Victoria University. Coming from a combined professional dance and education background, I have a broad skill set to share.
The genres I've trained in are; Classical Ballet, Jazz, Tap, National Character, Modern Dance, Contemporary, Flamenco, Folk, Ballroom and Song and Dance.
Concurrent with primary school teaching, I continued my advanced dance training at leading dance studios in Melbourne. I also travelled to London where I took classes at Pineapple Dance Studios, and New York for sessions at The Joffrey Ballet School and Broadway Dance Center. I've completed numerous dance, human movement and voice seminars and classes with renowned guest teachers from all over the world.
Approached in 1986 to create a new Jazz syllabus, I collaborated with Jennifer Newbold to generate 10 levels of jazz training (later to become Southern Federation of Dance). This expanded to helping design a Classical Ballet syllabus for SFD.
I went on to become both President and Secretary of SFD, as well as a dance examiner and adjudicator; and have had the privilege of examining thousands of dance students in ballet, jazz and tap over a 20 year period. For SFD I instigated competitions, masterclasses, teacher training courses, and workshops. I've also mentored trainee dance examiners.
In 1996 and 1997, I was a member of the steering committee for the Guidelines for Australian Dance Teachers, which led to the formation of Interim Competency Standards for Australian Dance Teachers (1998).
During 2001 and 2002, I lectured in Dance and Drama at Victoria University, in the School of Human Movement, Recreation and Performance.
I ran a large dance school for 16 years in the Brighton area before opening Dancentre Wyndham (now PointCookDance) in 2009.
In 2010 I finalised a unique Preschooler DanceFun program for 3 - 5 year olds, and created another junior syllabus for Classical Ballet, Jazz & Tap.
In 2018 & 2019 I was Assistant Choreographer for Madiba The Musical, which toured both Australia and New Zealand and Local Choreographer for the Australian tour of Fastlove - a tribute to George Michael.
I've always enjoyed energy and passion for dance, and believe in the importance of continuous professional development. I regularly attend amateur and professional performances, both in Australia and France.
