"What We Owe" it is a 12-minutes period drama based on a real historical event, and it's a VCA graduation student project.

The story sets In 1857 Victoria. Yi Xi, a Chinese female miner who wants to take down her community’s corrupt leader, but she must overcome all kinds of barriers in order to uphold her voice in a shame trial. She is not afraid to challenge the authority, even she is been underestimate by the other man in the room because the orientation of the society will be determined by the ruler's integrity if authoritarian power becomes the law.

We're looking for actors who are passioned about historical drama to join us on the team!

Audition / Rehearsal / Production dates

Production dates will be on 24th-29th July

Job payment

Unpaid – this is a collaboration opportunity - Student Film

Expenses paid - addition costs will be cover, such as transportation fee

Collaborations should create mutual benefit and are usually amateur, student or 'Time for Print' projects.


Yi Xi, Chinese female miner (Lead Actor)

Yi Xi: She disguised herself as a man, comes to Australia with the troop from Canton. She lives alone by herself on the Victoria goldfield. Soon after she arrived, her herbalist skill has saved many Chinese miners, and she pans gold and works with them together. *This role requires to speak fluent Cantonese, and English

Ah Kun, Chinese Headman (Lead Actor)

*This role requires to speak fluent Cantonese, and basic English Ah Kun is the Headman of the Chinese community, speaks fluent English. He comes to join the Victoria gold rush in the early days, after working as a miner and owns a store. The Federal government nominates him as the Chinese protector on the field. His duty is to manage the Chinese miners and trading supply with them, he also collects tax from them for the government.

June is a European female miner, who has also attended the trial as an audience with the rest of the women. She has no friends on the goldfield because she is a strong and independent working woman. She is living with her brother who is also a miner, knowing as being brutal and violent.
