I am looking for a number of lighting crew to help me realize a feature-film I am filming in August/September. To be brief, I have written, storyboarded, and begun casting a film called 'Joan of Arc Versus the State of Texas' - which, if I am to describe it briefly and pretentiously - is kind of a really dark Melodrama that plays like a Screwball Comedy but directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini.

The film is a study of power and psychological manipulation; the means by which power is often administered. It takes as it’s demonstrative subject an abusive relationship between two women - Gertrud and Elvira - who along with living together, develop both a professional and romantic relationship. Throughout the film; Gertrud incrementally dominates Elvira - first by seducing her, ridding her of her previous relationship, her friends and employing her as her assistant before progressively enslaving her within the home. Due to Gertrud’s unpredictable oscillation between doting affection and extreme sadism - Elvira for the most part willingly participates in her own domination due to infatuation. Upon being given the freedom to leave Elvira chooses instead to continue being abused and enslaved.

The film will be shot, structured and edited in a way not dissimilar to the aforementioned Melodrama of Douglas Sirk. I have chosen to reference Melodrama due to its atypical discussion of domestic relationships, the centrality of the female character and it’s recently renewed importance in Marxist film-theory.

I am looking for two or three people with an interest for or previous experience with lighting. Because I see myself as working in the Brechtian tradition - I am looking for people who are perhaps interesting in indulging their more experimental and artificial side. I'm looking to work extremely formalistically as I am also looking to reference the painters of the French Baroque.

Sadly, this work will be unpaid - I am able to financially secure the necessary circumstances for making this film, but barely. Because of this, I am looking for people interested in adding something dramatic and obscure to their portfolio and people looking for a credit in a film that will be shown throughout the festival cycle in 2020.
