Two Actresses for 'Hatch' Theatre Production

London, UK

Casting two actresses for "Hatch." Prouduction states: "Our annual Actor Awareness new writing festival is at the beginning of September, in The Barons Court Theatre.

'Hatch' depicts an encounter between two women who arrive at a so-called 'baby hatch' in Hillbrow, the notoriously violent and lawless inner city district of Johannesburg. They are there to give their newborn babies away. This gripping drama will lead you down a path of unexpected twists and turns, where you’ll find yourself questioning your own moral compass. ‘What would I do in that situation? What would it take for me to give up my own child?'"

Keneuwe: Kenuewe is a mother of four. She has very little money and very little control over her life. Throughout the play the audience learns that her husband forced her to work as a prostitute to earn money for the family. Desperate not to work as a prostitute, she kept her child when she eventually fell pregnant. Her husband knew that she did this on purpose to stop working and forces her to abandon her baby. She loves her child and wants to keep it more than anything, but feels she has no choice but to abandon it in her situation. She is very motherly and feels a sense of duty to stop Faith from abandoning her child as she feels that Faith is making a mistake. Keneuwe believes that Faith’s wealth means she has much more fruitful options other than to abandon her child.

Faith: Faith is very rich. Her ambition in life is to become a champion boxer, something she has been training for since her early teens. After a one night stand, Faith becomes pregnant. Her religious mother refuses to let her abort the baby, and instead agrees on adoption when the baby is born. Unfortunately, when the baby comes, the parents who were going to adopt the child no longer want it because the baby has Down's Syndrome. Faith can't have a child if she wants to pursue her career in boxing. Although Faith is a very strong willed character, she can momentarily be broken down by Keneuwe’s constant reminder that she is making the wrong choice. However, she has a thing or two to teach Keneuwe about letting men rule her life.
