THE WEEPING WOMAN is a short psychological horror framed around the real Australian historic event of the mysterious 1986 theft of Pablo Picasso’s, “Weeping Woman”, from the National Gallery of Victoria. It explores how the protagonist, Elaine, is unwillingly entwined into the theft as she is deceived by her manipulative boyfriend, Ian, into attending a fake art therapy retreat run by a cult that has stolen the artwork.

At its core, “The Weeping Woman” functions to empower an audience through Elaine’s rise to physical and emotional freedom. It explores elements of emotionally abusive relationships including the abuse of consent, trust, and control depicting them through the visual metaphor of art.

'The Weeping Woman' is a graduate piece for Swinburne Film and Television students looking to shoot in 2021. The final film will be submitted to film festivals both nationally and internationally.
