25 Young Dancers for Abstract and Awe-Inspiring LGBT Film

New South Wales, Australia
Listed by View details

What does it mean to be a man? 'I'm Not Gay' is an independent, not-for-profit, feature length film that seeks to answer this question while challenging the status quo on both sides of the fence. Four unique dance sequences will be used to invigorate the underlying narrative of the film, and to demand a deeper consideration of its social and political commentary, which centres on the gay male identity. The film is being directed and scored by Nathan Short, with choreography created in collaboration with the brilliant Loredo Malcolm (The Lion King, The Book of Mormon, Hamilton).

Dancers from ages 10 to 35 are required to help drive the 4 x 3 min dance vignettes. Extras will also be required to help fill in some of the scenes. The filming will take place in Sydney over 1-2 days. Rehearsals will be both in studio and online throughout April. Performance in late May. While this project is not-for-profit, all performers will be paid a modest $20/hr.

Dance #1 (Social Networking) [Ages 18+, males only]

A young man uses Grindr for the first time. He’s bewildered by a relentless flurry of desire, desperation and disparity. Amidst the masked chaos, he finds a man that catches his eye. Style: Jazz, Broadway, abstract, quirky. Themes: identity, intersectionality, community, racism.

Dance #2 (Masculinity vs. Femininity) [Ages 18+, males only, extras required]

Three effeminate white men and three masculine asian men find their nature confronted and amplified in this universal battle of gender expression. Style: contemporary, aggressive, enlightening. Themes: gender, toxic masculinity.

Dance #3 (Childhood/Trauma) [Ages 10-17, males only].

A man finds his arms bound by rope. He resists a relentless backward pull. A group of boys are seen to be at the other end, drawing him back. The man breaks free. A weight lifts from his shoulders. He dances will elation alongside the boys, the scene now much brighter. Style: Contemporary, joyful, inspiring. Themes: letting go, acceptance, childhood trauma.

Dance #4 (Capitalism) [Ages 10-35, women and men]

The most politically professional and outrageous-by-design of the four sequences. Two men participate in an over-stylised, performative wedding. The scene shifts to a drag queen leading a Motown-inspired group of boys (ages 10-16) who are dressed in girl's school uniforms. The scene shifts again, this time to a group of women. They enter fully clothed except for their chest, which is covered by their arms (as if in shame). Finally, these women erupt in a dance of defiance, revealing their bare chest. The scene ends with money raining down from above - not in reward, but in silence. Style: Jazz meets Hip Hop, satirical, aggravating, necessary. Themes: materialism, feminism, gender.

NOTE: It is understood that considerable justification is sensible when requesting elements of nudity from performers. The radical nature of the final scene, as described above, is designed to be subversive and empowering for women. It has been designed in collaboration with women and members of the LGBT+ community. These performers must be over the age of 18. This scene will be filmed separately to that containing minors.

I look forward to working with you as we use the medium of dance to shake things up for the next generation.

The owner of this listing has agreed to abide by local 'working with children' regulations. All minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
