I am an Australian filmmaker. My short film, Devil Wears a Suit, is currently on the film festival circuit in North America, Europe and Australia. It won the Overall Best Short Film and Outstanding Artistic Achievement at the FilmOut Film Festival in June 2017, and has been officially selected into festivals in Chicago, Austin, North Carolina, Los Angeles and Atlanta. I have been invited to participate in Q&As after the screening’s, and while I’m here in New York, I want to shoot this unofficial music video/short film, set to an incredible Lorde song, "Sober".

It's super informal - maybe 4-5 hours a day for 2 or 3 days. Most likely each actor will only be needed a maximum of 2 days. This is something that we can all be proud of and a great vehicle to show some incredible acting range - from loving, happy, to an intensely brooding and emotionally determined fierceness. We should all want to make something profoundly thought-provoking and engaging.

It's about two lesbian girls who are in love. They Google a method to 'get over each other', so one can go off overseas to pursue their career. They have to drink vodka while staring at each other and when they pass out - they will no longer be in love.

Lorde’s song is about this need people seem to have to be drunk. She asks, ‘what would we do when we’re sober?’. To me, this is about the social masks we need to participate in social situations - dates, when out with friends, clubs. It seems to suggest that when young people are stripped of their artificial mask of intoxication, underneath, we are not fully developed humans. We’re emotionally stunted. We don’t want to feel.

When drunk, we can temporarily shut down those damaging emotions of sadness, grief, loneliness. My story is about a couple that must break up because of factors outside their control. So the two of them Google a method that involves drinking vodka while staring directly into each others eyes. When you pass out, you wake up being completely ‘over’ that person.

The point I want to suggest to audience’s is that alcohol can have this amazing affect of allowing us to be ‘over’ a person, an emotion, a grievance. But it is, ultimately, temporary. At the end of the film, once we have established to audiences that this ‘alcohol method’ is viable and really works - the effects wears off. One half of the couple, wearing her scrubs, years into her medicine degree, sits on a train. She thought she was over her ex, but it hits her like a tonne of bricks. The alcohol has worn off.

This is a 2-3 day fun, informal shoot, shot between Sep 1-6th.
It’ll just be me and my camera - no lights, assistants, sound recordists - it’s guerrilla style filmmaking where the intention by the performers and director is to create a work of art.

Audition / Rehearsal / Production dates

Sep 1-6th (very soon, quick turnaround!)

1 Girl - Brooding, emotional, intense, loving

You're one half of a loving lesbian relationship. During flashbacks, you're in love, smiling and happy. But when you're serious - downing straight vodka while staring intensely in your partner's eyes, your look is brooding. Your eyes say everything - you don't want to do this, but you have to. It's a look of determination.

Being fit is a plus, as you may have to jog through central park for a tiny bit.
