Casting Notice for Australian Premiere of New Musical in Melbourne
GHOST QUARTET is a musical song cycle about love, death and whiskey – the live performance of a concept album. A camera breaks and four friends drink in four interwoven narratives spanning seven centuries: a warped fairy tale about two sisters, a treehouse astronomer and a lazy evil bear; a retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher; a purgatorial intermezzo about Scheherazade and the ghost of Thelonious Monk; and a contemporary fable about a subway murder. The show is staged in the round with the performer-musicians seated amongst the audience, and the piece is scored for four voices, cello, guitars, dulcimer, autoharp, piano, keyboards and percussion. It is inspired by murder ballads, doo-wop, angular bebop, Chinese folk, Islamic adhan, and the music of Bernard Herrmann and George Crumb.
The roles in this production are not age or gender specific. The four cast members also accompany the show on a variety of instruments. Therefore, all performers must also be proficient in at least one of the below requisite instruments and comfortable with portions of improvisation and experimentation. The role of the pianist has already been cast.
Requisite instruments: Cello, Erhu, Alto Metallophone, Celtic Harp
Supplemental instruments: Accordion, Dulcimer, Guitar, various percussion
Performers will be asked to prepare and self-accompany two songs, one in “folk” style and one in a contrasting style (not musical theatre) which demonstrates vocal versatility. For reference, the original cast recording is available on YouTube.
GHOST QUARTET will be directed and designed by Brandon Pape (Artistic Director for ATC), with music direction by David Butler (Mad World, Falsettos) and musical staging by Madison Lee (Mad World, The Wild Party). Rehearsals will be scheduled based on actor availability. This is an independent theatre production that will adhere to MEAA guidelines. As such, performers will be remunerated on an honorarium basis. For more information or to schedule an audition, please contact with headshot and CV.
Antipodes Theatre Company is the newly announced theatrical arm of Brooklyn Runaways, a cabaret and live performance collective that previously produced the acclaimed cabaret From: New York, For: Him (The Butterfly Club, Adelaide Fringe) as well as several shows with the cabaret duo Mel & Peppy. GHOST QUARTET will be their first full-length production.
