"Like how I remember" is a family drama centred around an 8 year old boy, Lee, who runs away from home on the first birthday after the passing of his father. Their family used to have a birthday tradition of folding and eating dumplings together but now confronted with the tradition without his father, the young boy decides to embark on an adventure to a sacred place that his father had once taken him. His father had told him that when he had first come to Australia, he would come to this isolated beach whenever he missed his home in China and shout his mother's name into the ocean and he would swear he could hear her call back. Armed with this information, our little protagonist attempts to make his own way to this beach in the hopes of hearing the voice of his own father. Along the way; Lee makes a new best friend - a pet rock who acts as our silent partner in crime, who through the course of the story, comes to teach Lee about friendship, pain and ultimately acceptance.

All minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Lee. A young Asian boy, a wallflower

A highly creative
child, Lee often feels like an outcast amongst his peers especially after the passing of his father
who was his main source of confidence and support. Lee has no trouble making friends within
the realms of his imagination but its the real life counterparts that draw him into his shell and
this is why he is often perceived as somewhat of a quiet, introverted soul.

Males, aged 8 to 12

  • Ethnicity: Chinese, Eurasian / Pan Asian, Japanese, Korean, South Asian

Mama/June. Mother of Lee

June is a deeply caring but emotionally
distant from her son since the passing of her husband. The way she expresses her love is by
working hard and putting food on the table. She’s the type of woman who would never actively
say ‘I love you’, but would rather go hungry and save the money that was meant for her lunch to
buy a gift for her son.

Females, aged 25 to 40

  • Ethnicity: Chinese, Eurasian / Pan Asian, Japanese, Korean, South Asian
  • Languages: Cantonese, Mandarin

Baba. Father of Lee

A father who recently passed. When he was alive, he was
deeply affectionate with both his wife and son. If you were to imagine a family dynamic, he was
the glue of the family who encouraged his son’s imagination and always managed to make his
wife smile even when she was stressed or pent up about their bleak financial situation. He was
the type of man who would work as much as he could to provide for his family but would always
come home with a smile on his face.

Males, aged 30 to 48

  • Ethnicity: Chinese, Eurasian / Pan Asian, Japanese, Korean, South Asian
  • Languages: Cantonese, Mandarin
