Influences: John Mclaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Stevie Wonder, Sting, George Benson
I am a skilled, creative guitarist/composer working professionally in the genres of jazz, fusion, soul, funky pop and blues. My influences over the years have been and are George Benson, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, Allan Holdsworth, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Eric Clapton and The Beatles, which all reflect in my playing. I have written and recorded many songs, and have composed for video, stage dramas, and radio. I have also worked as a session guitarist on a number of commercial albums (eg PWL), plus stints as musical director and band leader in various situations. I am an authorised guitar tutor with the national Registry of Guitar Tutors (RGT London), and a paid-up member of the Musicians Union. In my 'day job', I teach guitar in Newcastle schools and privately, and have run University courses in guitar techniques and understanding popular music. I have a BA Hons degree in Creative Arts. I currently have two vocals/guitar duos, Nuvo with Amy Purvis on vocals (currently on hold due to the arrival of a new baby), and Firefly with vocalist Colette. Firefly plays at D'Acqua restaurant in Sunderland on the last Thursday of each month. We cover songs from across the decades, including swing, soul and modern groove pop. I also play with 'Steve Lee and the Soulutions', covering soul classics. Finally, I occasionally play solo instrumentals when required.
